Prepaid Cards: Types, Uses & Growth
Prepaid cards serve diverse purposes, ranging from everyday spending to gift-giving and financial management. According to Javelin Strategy & Research’s 2026 Prepaid Payments Data Book, the most common type of prepaid card purchase is the retailer-specific gift card, accounting for 72% of all acquisitions. General-purpose non-reloadable cards represent 50%, general-purpose reloadable cards account for 29%, and multi-retailer gift cards make up 25% of purchases. Common use cases include personal budgeting, gift and incentive programs, alternatives to traditional bank accounts, gaming payments, cash-access solutions, and commercial incentive programs.
Growth Projections by Segment
Over the next five years, many prepaid categories are forecast to grow at roughly 5% annually. Faster growth—averaging about 8% per year—is expected for gift cards, gaming-related payments, cash-access alternatives, and commercial incentive programs, driven by increased consumer and business adoption. Government-funded programs continue to represent a significant share of prepaid volume, but their growth remains more modest, influenced by policy shifts, federal funding adjustments, and cost-of-living changes tied to programs such as Social Security and nutritional assistance.
