Resident Evil Requiem – Hands-On Impressions & Gameplay
I’ve been hearing for months that Resident Evil Requiem is a kind of supercut of everything fans love about RE2, RE4, and RE7. After spending three glorious hours with a hands-on demo—most of it as the new protagonist Grace—I can confirm that Capcom isn’t just paying homage; it’s remixing the best parts into something that feels both familiar and startlingly fresh.
A Familiar Hub with Fresh Horrors
Grace’s early adventure unfolds inside the Raccoon City Civic Care Center, and the moment I stepped into its two-story lobby I felt a tingle of déjà vu. The layout echoes the Raccoon City Police Department: a grand central hall with a puzzle door, two flanking wings, and a safe room just off the lobby equipped with a typewriter and storage box. That safe room became my anchor, the starting point for a series of nerve-wracking mini-expeditions as I hunted for keycards and items. But Requiem doesn’t just copy the rhythm; it reimagines the zombies. The shambling staff and patients each have unique behaviors and vocalizations that tell their own story—tipsy partiers clutching wine bottles, a patient muttering about loud noises while dragging an IV stand, others howling when I flicked on the lights and scrambling to turn them off. This individualized enemy design makes every encounter memorable and reduces the series’ reliance on overabundant journals for exposition. (Don’t worry, there are still plenty of notes—where else would you find a safe combination?).
