Honkai: Star Rail Beta Review: A Promising RPG

As a dedicated Genshin Impact player, I was curious how HoYoverse would follow up its massive success with Honkai: Star Rail. After spending considerable time in the closed beta, I’m happy to report that it’s shaping up to be another engaging live-service RPG, even if some systems initially feel overwhelming. Though it’s a sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd, the story stands alone—I had no trouble jumping in without prior knowledge.

A Familiar Yet Fresh Universe

You create a protagonist (male or female, your choice) who carries a Stellaron—a seed of destruction—within them. After waking on a derelict spaceship, you join the Trailblazers aboard the Astral Express, traveling to planets in need. The cast of anime-styled characters is vibrant, brought to life by a strong voice cast that gives everyone real personality and narrative depth. Early on, I learned about each companion’s origins, goals, and worldview. Some are unlocked through the main story; others require rail passes in the gacha system. The gacha odds are transparent, and while the dopamine hit of pulling a 5-star is real, it’s entirely optional—I progressed through the entire story without spending a dime.
