HotCars Artist Reimagines 1973 Ford Ranchero As A Blown Pro-Touring Restomod

For decades, the Chevrolet El Camino has soaked up the limelight as America’s favorite car-truck hybrid to modify. Meanwhile, its slightly older rival, the Ford Ranchero, has often been relegated to second-tier status—appreciated by purists but rarely the canvas for radical performance builds. A new digital rendering from a HotCars artist, however, throws that script out the window. The image depicts a 1973 Ranchero transformed into a modern pro-touring machine, complete with a monstrous blower poking through the hood and aggressive stance. It raises a compelling question: Why have restomodders overlooked the Ranchero for so long?

The Ranchero first appeared in 1957, a full two years before the El Camino, and remained in production until 1979. Over that 22-year run, Ford fitted the utilitarian pickup-car with some of its most ferocious powerplants. The 1970 and 1971 models could be ordered with the legendary 429 Cobra Jet, which cranked out 375 horsepower—a figure that, while not record-shattering by today’s standards, was enough to transform a humble trucklet into a tire-shredding street brawler. Other era-appropriate engines included the 351 Cleveland and, earlier, the FE-series big blocks. Yet despite this pedigree, hot-rodded Rancheros are a rare sight at cars and coffee, let alone full-blown restomods.
