Red Dead 2 Sales Hit 85M – No GTA 6 Hype
Red Dead Redemption 2 has reached a remarkable sales milestone, but Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick insists the cowboy epic’s sustained success owes little to the looming hype for Grand Theft Auto 6. As of March 2026, the Rockstar Games title has sold 85 million copies, making it the third best-selling game of all time. It displaced Wii Sports to claim that spot, now trailing only Minecraft in first place and GTA 5 in second. Even more striking, the game recorded its best sales year since its original launch, demonstrating impressive longevity in a fast-moving market.
Some observers have speculated that the long gap between Grand Theft Auto releases—and the anticipation for GTA 6—may have driven players toward Red Dead Redemption 2, but Zelnick rejects that idea outright. In an interview, he stated plainly that the game’s performance “stands alone.” He acknowledged that Rockstar holds an almost unique brand position in entertainment, where consumers tend to be interested in all of its offerings, but he does not believe GTA 6 hype played a significant role in RDR2’s recent surge.
A Loyal Audience, Not a Cross-Over Boost
Instead, Zelnick attributes the game’s enduring appeal to the “very loyal and engaged audience” that the Red Dead series has cultivated. He also expressed personal affection for the title, saying, “And they love the title. And by the way, I love the title.” This fan-driven momentum, he argues, is the core reason for the game’s continued commercial strength.
