Arc Raiders: China-Exclusive PvE Mode Upsets Players

Embark Studios, co-developing Arc Raiders with Tencent, has introduced a China-exclusive PvE “safe zone” mode, sparking frustration among global players who have long requested nonviolent gameplay. According to fan translations of Embark’s Chinese website, the safe zone mode makes all players friendly by default, though anyone can choose to defect and will be marked as a red-highlighted traitor. China will also receive a dual-boss battleground where the Queen and Matriarch appear simultaneously, along with new weapon and armor skins—including a helmet with lopsided mouse ears.

Global Arc Raiders players have reacted with envy, expressing strong interest in opting out of PvP and trying the exclusive modes. One Reddit user claiming to have been invited to the safe zone’s closed beta noted that Chinese players’ unique insights are now valued, saying they check simplified Chinese reviews before buying games. This sentiment reflects a broader shift: Chinese gamers are often known for severe Steam reviews due to limited domestic channels and poor localization, as IndieBI CEO Tom Kaczmarczyk warned developers. However, the exclusive content has led some global players to reconsider their dismissiveness of Chinese feedback.

The potential for these features to reach the mainline build remains uncertain. Embark previously pivoted away from pure PvE to preserve development momentum, but the studio has acknowledged an unexpected appetite for peaceful play and has discussed plans to lean into it. Meanwhile, Arc Raiders recently reduced the cost of new Expedition Vault slots by 2 million coins after poor sales, showing active monetization adjustments. Whether the China-only content will go global is still unclear, but the debate over PvP versus PvE continues to shape the game’s evolution.
